As you start on your voice over journey you’ll need the ability to showcase your abilities to potential clients. The best way to do this is with a demo reel.
This is generally a compiliation of samples, usually all in the same genre (eg Commercials, Characters, accents, corporate) that demonstrate what you’re capable of and should include different styles of reads (soft sell, conversational, serious etc).
Here are 3 Voice Over Demo Reels we’ve produced recently.
Michael Kay
Eleanor Stankiewicz
Kim Mannaa
For Michael and Eleanor their demos have been created in full, recording completely new material where as with Kim, she used a combination of recent work she had done along with new material we produced for her demo.
How we create Voice Over Demo Reels
We start by having a conversation with you and listening to any samples of work or auditions may already have. If you don’t have any samples that’s ok, we’ll get a good idea of your voice type during out conversation that will us get the right scripts for you to record.
Yes, we source all of the scripts to use in recording your demo, making sure we have a range that will help you showcase different types of reads (Natural conversational, soft sell, energetic etc).
Once we have the scripts all sorted out you’ll come into the studio for a recording session (usually up to 2 hours) to record everything. We aim to do no more than 4 takes on each script. This ensures you are abile to replicate the performance on your demo reel in professional recording situations.
After recording there’s about a day of post production to create fully produced versions of all the recordings which are then cut down to a compilation of around 2minutes.
Great! When can I book a demo session?
Honestly you can make a Voice Over Demo at any point and yes, you could do it yourself, but here’s a couple of things to consider.
You need to have the skills – Reading scripts accurately and with meaning.
Can you follow direction? – If someone gives you verbal or written direction, can you execute it as they expect.
Are you ready to self record? – It’s now essential to have your own recording setup (home studio/booth) not just for auditions but to record work for clients. If you’re expecting that every voice over opportunity includes an invitation to attend a professional studio, that’s not likely to be the case, especially when starting out.
What will you do with your demo? – Have a plan. Where will your demo ‘live’ so potential clients can hear your voice? Will you consider signing up to casting websites?
If you’re very new to voice over, we don’t recommend knocking on the door of Voice Over agents, as they are usually looking for experienced talent with proven success.
